We recently hosted a Members Event with Digital Marketing Expert CJ Johnson. CJ focused on social media during the age of uncertainty, and shared his tips for adapting your brand during times of change.
1. Become an authority.
Rise to the occasion and become a leader in your space. Become the change you want to see. Continue to educate yourself more about your industry and how it can positively impact the world. Share what you learned - this might mean opening up more on your channels to allow your customers to see the processes behind what you do.
2. Be transparent.
You cannot hide behind a logo or a bland company message anymore. Audiences and consumers are demanding more transparency from you, give it to them. If you’re a part of a team, share more about the company culture or how your products are made. If you are a solopreneur, you should do the same by sharing more behind the scenes.
3. Know your values.
The reason why there has been so much uncomfortableness, confusion, and even anger around so many challenges businesses are facing is simple... Most don’t know their values. This is not about brand messaging or company culture. Do you believe in climate change? Should you wear a mask or not? Is your company against same sex marriage? Does your startup support social equality? You should easily know the answers to these questions. If you don’t, take out the time to jot it down. Do your own independent research. This will make you much more ready to respond or take action on certain issues that will undoubtedly come up in the future.
4. Be creative.
Tackle your messaging and your visual narrative in brand new ways. If you discover you aren’t very creative, lean on a team-member, friend, or a colleague that is. Make a fun TikTok tutorial on how to use your product, post a behind the scenes video, create your own branded gifs for free on Giphy - get creative with it. Do a Twitter live instead of an IG live just to see the response you get. Have fun, and understand the mediums are temporary: nothing is lost by trying something new. The goal here is to think more outside of the box.
5. Streamline your customer experience.
How do companies prepare for a high-pressure, low-time group that craves ease of purchase rather than price discounts? They need to create an easy journey from the point of discovery, to the point of sale. In short, declutter the digital experience, streamline the consumer or audience journey and take a less-is-more approach to your product offering.
