A group of 10 startup workers and techies piled in to the vintage VW van, and we headed down Highway 1 leaving the city behind. Stopping at the Swanton Strawberry farm on the way for some delectable baked goods. The House has an open layout and calming feel, with a yard equipped with a hot tub. And only a short stroll to the ocean it’s the perfect beachside getaway.
After settling in we made our way down to the beach for either a surf lesson or volleyball. I was stoked to get back out on the water and with the help of the Club Ed Surf School, I caught a fair few waves. As I floated around waiting for the next one, I thought, I could get used to life down here.
We had worked up quite an appetite for the tasty tri tip BBQ dinner. Then settled down to listen to David Dennis from Microsoft. David gave an excellent talk on work life balance. He has orchestrated his work and personal passions, including surfing and photography into socially and environmentally rewarding projects. One of many projects , Ventana surfboards are made from recycled wood, cut-offs coming from numerous local Santa Cruz business’s.
A pitch battles ensued with 5 guys and 2 girls, myself included, giving a pitch on their startup ideas. The winner off the battle won a years membership to the Outsite community.
Some of the group hit the town, but after a long day, an early night falling asleep to the sound of the waves was just what I needed. To round off the trip in the morning we had an hour of yoga on the beach. Then sadly it was time to hop back in the bus back towards San Francisco. Outsite is the perfect location for a relaxing getaway and I am eagerly looking for any excuse to go back.
Thanks to everyone who showed up for Start Up Surf Bus! You were great company!
