Meet Digital Nomad Sophie Trotman, Nutritional Therapist who recently adopted a hybrid lifestyle after transitioning out of a career in sales and launching her business

The Essentials:

  • Hometown: London
  • Born in: 1992
  • Lifestyle: Hybrid
  • Employer: Self Employed
  • Industry: Nutrition

Tell us a bit about yourself:

I'm a registered Nutritionist from London. I used to work in early stage tech companies in the sales function. I enjoyed the work, but I wanted to learn more about nutrition and I wanted to be able to work for myself in the future, so I enrolled in a four year nutrition course and studied it alongside work. I qualified last year, and have been working for myself full time. I love what I do! I spent the pandemic in London, and as a former language student (I studied French, Spanish and Portuguese at University), I missed Europe. In March, I decided to test out living in Portugal, and I decided to book to stay in Lisbon with Outsite, as the rooms are great to work from and you have a higher chance of making friends quickly! Safe to say, after three days in Lisbon, I knew that I wanted to move here. The sun, food, wine and the entrepreneurial and creative people that Lisbon attracts make it a wonderful place. I head back to London in two weeks, from where I will apply for the Digital Nomad Visa and hope to move back to Lisbon in September! I can do most of my work virtually, but plan on flying back to London for a week every now and then to do some in-person work and see friends and family.

What are you working on currently?

I do a lot of virtual and in-person work with businesses - running workshops on topics such as eating for a good night's sleep, eating to beat the 3pm slump, eating for mental health, eating for female health and more. I also do 1:1 consultations with employees, which work well if the business has a per-head wellbeing budget. I work with tech companies, law firms, financial services firms and more. I also have a virtual private practice where I see clients for an average of three months for a variety of concerns such as weight loss, gut health, low energy, skin health, hormone imbalances and more. I also write for various publications and I consult for wellness brands. If you're interested in any of that, get in touch!

What's next for you?

The exciting thing about science is that it is always evolving. I spend a lot of time staying on top of new research. I also spend time learning about how I can grow my business. I'm currently trying to grow my Instagram and TikTok - so give me a follow if you're on those platforms! I would love to connect with people who have experience growing a service-based business. I'm always looking to connect with more businesses that require workplace wellbeing services, so if you think that the company you work for may be interested in this, get in touch.

Tell us about your experience with Outsite so far.

Staying at Outsite has been worth every penny. My housemates were all similarly-minded. Everyone has interesting professional lives and everyone also just wants to enjoy life. I've made great friends. Last week, we rented a catamaran for the day and sailed out to the sea. It was such a good day! We also go for a lot of dinners and brunches. Another great thing about Outsite is the desk in the room. This sounds like such a simple thing, but lots of accommodations don't have this! Also, if you're staying at Outsite in Lisbon, you can use Outsite Cowork Café. I'm always productive when I work from there. Another great thing is that the Community Manager arranges weekly dinners. This is another great way to meet people. Outsite is perfect if you want to experience a new place in an easy way. I'll definitely be using Outsite again in the future. I want to try the Biarritz location!

Do you have any tips or recommendations that have helped you navigate the nomadic lifestyle?

Try to say yes to most things (within reason). Some nights, I didn't feel like going out, but I told myself to go and just stay for a bit of time and see how it was. Every night, I ended up having a great time and meeting wonderful people. Join a gym! I joined Amplify in Lisbon (which is brilliant), and I made a great friend waiting outside the Bootcamp class!

What's got you excited these days?

Untamed - Glennon Doyle (incredible book that makes you think about your life - read it!), my Peloton bike (lol) - it's currently in London obviously, but it's so helpful for quick, inspiring workouts, and vinho verde....it's reason enough to come to Portugal in my opinion!
